Why Ducks Love Beavers: Exploring Our State Animal – Central Point

November 6, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Please join us for an exploration into the history of our relationship with the American beaver (Caster canadensis) and how it is changing. We will learn about the life history of our state animal to help explain why they do what they do. We will also explain why many folks refer to beavers as “keystone species” and “ecosystem engineers” and relate this to their influence on the landscape. Beavers have made an incredible population recovery after almost being extirpated by fur trapping from our region. This comeback has provided us with an opportunity to create a reciprocal relationship with this special animal. Beavers can be helpful in managing land and assisting us with ecological stream restoration.

There will be a one-hour lecture and discussion, followed by a walk to the beaver habitat at Hanley Farm. Please bring appropriate footwear for walking on uneven, muddy terrain.
